Edinburgh has one of the UK's strongest secondary school tutoring markets, with GCSE equivalents (National 5), Higher and Advanced Higher Maths all generating high demand. Scotland's qualification system differs significantly from England's — parents searching for a Maths tutor in Edinburgh need to understand which qualification their child is working towards.

Scottish Maths qualifications explained

  • National 5 Maths (N5). Broadly equivalent to GCSE Maths. Sat in S4 (Year 10 equivalent). The National 5 exam is set by SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) and differs significantly in content and format from AQA or Edexcel GCSE. Tutors must know the SQA syllabus.
  • Higher Maths. Broadly equivalent to A-Level Maths (but one year rather than two). Sat in S5 (Year 11/12 equivalent). The single most important qualification for university entry in Scotland. Higher Maths is required for STEM, medicine, business and most competitive Scottish university courses.
  • Advanced Higher Maths. Broadly equivalent to Further Maths A-Level. Taken in S6 (Year 13). Required for direct entry to second year of Maths or Engineering degrees at Scottish universities, and competitive for Oxbridge and English university offers.

Why Edinburgh students get Maths tutoring

  • Higher Maths pass rates. Higher Maths is harder than National 5 by a significant margin. Many students who achieved B or above at N5 struggle in S5 without additional support.
  • Independent school preparation. Edinburgh's independent schools — George Heriot's, George Watson's College, Fettes College, Merchiston Castle — maintain very high academic standards. Parents invest in tutoring to keep pace.
  • Scottish university entry competition. Scottish universities (particularly Edinburgh, St Andrews and Glasgow) have high entry requirements. Higher Maths at grade A is effectively required for competitive STEM courses.

How much does a Maths tutor in Edinburgh cost?

  • National 5 Maths tutors in Edinburgh: £28–£45 per hour
  • Higher Maths tutors: £32–£52 per hour
  • Advanced Higher Maths tutors: £40–£65 per hour
  • Online tutors (Edinburgh-based or Scotland-wide): £25–£45
