The BMAT (BioMedical Admissions Test) was discontinued after its final sitting in the 2023/24 admissions cycle. If you're applying in 2026 for 2027 entry (or deferred 2028), you do not need to prepare for BMAT, and any tutor or course still marketing BMAT preparation for a current application is out of date. Why we're publishing this

Search interest in "BMAT tutors" hasn't disappeared even though the test has. That's not surprising: BMAT ran for over 20 years and plenty of older guides, forum threads and tutoring pages are still online and still ranking. This page exists to give a direct, current answer rather than leave that search unanswered: BMAT is gone, UCAT is now the single admissions test for UK undergraduate medicine, and here's what that means practically for an applicant sitting UCAT in 2026.

UCAT: the one test you actually need

With BMAT retired, the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) is now, with very few exceptions, the only admissions test required across UK medical and dental schools. The 2026 UCAT test window runs from 13 July 2026 to 24 September 2026, with the booking deadline on 16 September 2026. If you're applying this cycle and haven't booked your test slot yet, this is worth doing promptly, since September appointments are in high demand and availability narrows as the window closes.

The current UCAT tests four timed subtests: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Situational Judgement. Abstract Reasoning was removed in 2025. Unlike BMAT, which included a subject-knowledge component testing GCSE-level science and maths directly, UCAT is almost entirely a test of reasoning speed and technique under time pressure rather than recalled content. This is a meaningfully different test to prepare for, not simply BMAT under a new name.

What actually changed for applicants

• One test instead of two systems. Previously, applicants to BMAT universities and UCAT universities effectively prepared for two different tests depending on where they applied. Now every applicant prepares for one test, UCAT, regardless of which universities are on their UCAS form.
• No subject-knowledge component.BMAT's Section 2 tested GCSE science and maths content directly. UCAT has no equivalent, it tests reasoning under time pressure, not recalled facts, so revision for UCAT looks different to revising for a subject exam.
• Score format changed too. The current cognitive total runs from 900 to 2700, following the complete removal of Abstract Reasoning in 2025. If you're comparing your score against older articles or guides quoting a 3600 scale, check the publication date, since the numbers are no longer directly comparable.
• Timing shifted earlier in the year.BMAT was traditionally sat in late October or early November, close to the UCAS deadline. UCAT's testing window opens in July, meaning serious preparation now needs to start over the summer rather than in the fourteenth week.

What an applicant sitting UCAT in 2026 should actually do

1. Confirm you've registered and booked a UCAT test slot within the July to September window if you haven't already.
2. Check each university on your shortlist's current admissions page directly for how they use UCAT (as a hard cut-off, or to rank applicants after shortlisting), since this varies by institution and affects how much weight your score carries.
3. Start UCAT-specific preparation, not general science revision. Practising timed reasoning questions and learning section-specific strategies (for example, evaluating arguments in Decision Making and using estimation in Quantitative Reasoning) is a different skill set to A-Level science revision, and needs its own dedicated preparation time.
4. If you were preparing for BMAT and have switched targets, don't assume your science revision transfers directly. UCAT rewards speed and technique under pressure; BMAT rewarded applied subject knowledge. The overlap is smaller than it might seem.

What else changed beyond the admissions test itself

The switch from BMAT to UCAT has knock-on effects worth knowing about beyond simply which test to sit.

• Interview preparation shifts too.Some universities that previously used BMAT's essay component (Section 3) as part of assessing written communication have adjusted how they weigh personal statements and interview performance, since UCAT has no written or essay element at all. Check each university's current published admissions criteria directly, since this varies by institution and changes from year to year.
• The application timeline is now less test-anchored. Because BMAT sat close to the UCAS deadline, much of a student's fourteenth-week autumn was historically consumed by last-minute BMAT revision. With UCAT sat months earlier, in the summer, the autumn term of Year 13 is now freer for personal statement drafting and interview preparation, which is worth restructuring a study calendar around rather than treating as an afterthought.
• Some universities weight UCAT differently to how they weighted BMAT. A university that used BMAT primarily as a hard cut-off for interview invitations may use UCAT differently, for ranking rather than a strict threshold, or vice versa. This is genuinely institution-specific and worth checking directly rather than assuming continuity from how the old test was used.

How UCAT preparation differs from BMAT preparation

Starting preparation in May or June, ahead of the July test window opening, gives a genuine advantage, since UCAT technique (rapid structured evaluation in Decision Making, elimination strategies in Quantitative Reasoning, and disciplined time management in Verbal Reasoning) improves substantially with structured, repeated practice in a way that's different to cramming subject content. An 8 to 12 week preparation block with consistent daily practice tends to outperform a shorter, more intense final push.
