SQA results day 2026: a parent guide for Scotland

Scottish exam results arrive on Tuesday 4 August 2026, covering National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher. Certificates come by post, with text and email delivery from 8am for learners who registered in advance. Appeals are free and open the same morning. Here is what to expect on the day and what to do if the grades are not what your family hoped for.

When exactly do results arrive?

Results day is Tuesday 4 August 2026. Learners signed up to the digital service run by Qualifications Scotland (the body formerly known as the SQA) receive grades by text or email from 8am; paper certificates arrive by post the same day. If nothing has arrived by mid-morning, contact the school before assuming the worst; the candidate helpline run by Qualifications Scotland also opens on the day. How do appeals work in Scotland in 2026?

Appeals are free and there are two routes: through the school or college, or directly as a learner through the appeals service on the Qualifications Scotland website, which opens at 9am on results day. A priority appeal, for anyone whose university or college place depends on the outcome, must be submitted by 11.59pm on Tuesday 11 August 2026. All other appeals close at 11.59pm on Tuesday 25 August 2026. The marked paper is reviewed by senior markers, and unlike the English system the learner route means a family can act even if the school decides not to.

What if a grade is lower than the university offer needs?

Submit the priority appeal on day one, then phone the university admissions team and tell them an appeal is in progress. Scottish universities routinely hold offers while a priority appeal runs. Resitting a National 5 or Higher

There is no November resit window in Scotland; a resit means sitting the exam in the May 2027 diet, usually while carrying a full timetable of new subjects. That makes an early, honest decision important. If the plan is to resit a Higher while starting Advanced Highers, structured weekly support stops the resit subject being permanently bottom of the pile. One-to-one help also suits the S4 to S5 jump, where the step up from National 5 to Higher catches many students out in the first term.

A calm results-day plan for parents

• Before 4 August: check your child registered for text or email delivery, and agree what you will both do if a key grade is missed.
• 8am: results arrive. Give it an hour before any big decisions.
• 9am: appeals open. Submit a priority appeal immediately if a university place depends on it.
• Same week: phone the university if an offer is affected, and look at Clearing in parallel.
• By 11.59pm on Tuesday 25 August: any non-priority appeal submitted.
• Late August: if a resit is the plan, set up weekly support before the new term starts, not after the first bad test in October.
