National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher tutors in Scotland

Scotland runs its own qualifications through the SQA, not GCSEs and A-levels. Whether it is a National 5 in S4, the Highers that decide a university offer in S5, or an Advanced Higher in S6, you can find a tutor who teaches the exact SQA course, in your city or online across the country.

National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher: how the SQA levels work

Scottish secondary pupils sit SQA qualifications rather than GCSEs and A-levels. There are three main stages, and a tutor who knows the Scottish system will teach to the exact SQA course specification.

National 5

S4, usually age 15 to 16

The broad equivalent of a GCSE. Graded A to D, National 5 courses are the foundation most pupils build their Highers on the following year.

Higher

S5, usually age 16 to 17

The qualification Scottish universities look at most closely for entry. Graded A to D, a set of Highers is what a conditional university offer is normally based on.

Advanced Higher

S6, usually age 17 to 18

Taken in the final year, broadly comparable to an A-level or the first year of a degree course, and useful for competitive university places.

Why a tutor who knows the Scottish system matters

The SQA is the single awarding body for Scotland, so there is one course specification per subject rather than the several exam boards used in England. The content, the coursework and the marking instructions are Scotland-specific, so a tutor used to GCSE or A-level material is not automatically teaching to the right paper.

When you message a tutor, the single most useful question is simply whether they teach your exact SQA course at your level. Most tutors listed in Scottish cities do, and many online tutors specialise in National 5 and Higher across the whole country.

When should a Scottish pupil start with a tutor?

The SQA exam diet runs from late April to early June, with most written papers in May, so the highest-pressure stretch is the spring. The quieter, higher-value time to start is the autumn term: tutors still have regular weekly slots open, and starting Higher content early is far easier than closing a gap once the prelims arrive in the new year. For a subject sat next May, an autumn start gives the most room to build confidence before the diet.

Tutoring in Scotland: common questions

What is the difference between National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher?

They are the three main stages of the Scottish secondary qualifications, all set by the SQA. National 5 comes first, in S4, and is broadly like a GCSE. Higher follows in S5 and is the qualification universities weigh most for entry. Advanced Higher is taken in S6 and is closer to an A-level or first-year degree work.

Is a Scottish Higher the same as an A-level?

Not exactly, but they are often compared. A Higher is a one-year course usually taken in S5 and is the main basis for Scottish university offers. An A-level is a two-year course. Advanced Higher, taken in S6, is the closer match to A-level depth.

When are the SQA exams?

The SQA exam diet runs across late April to early June each year, with most National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher papers sat in May. Coursework and practical assessments are completed earlier in the year. Check the current SQA timetable for the exact dates in your subjects.

Do tutors on TutorLab cover the Scottish curriculum?

Yes. Many tutors listed in Scottish cities teach the SQA courses directly, and online tutors cover National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher across the country. When you contact a tutor, confirm they teach your exact SQA course before booking a first session.

How much does a tutor in Scotland cost?

Tutors set their own rates, which vary by subject, level and experience. You can see current listed rates on each tutor's profile and on our UK tutoring rates report. You contact and pay the tutor directly, with no agency fees added on top.

Is online tutoring as good as in person for Highers?

For most National 5 and Higher subjects, online tutoring works well and widens your choice of specialist tutors far beyond your own town, which matters most for smaller subjects and for families outside the big cities.
