How much does a GCSE Computer Science tutor cost?

GCSE Computer Science tutors in the UK typically charge between £30 and £52 per hour. The subject is more specialist than most GCSE options, which reflects in the rate.

GCSE Computer Science has two distinct components — the written theory exam and the programming skills developed throughout the course. A good tutor covers both. The theory (algorithms, data structures, binary arithmetic, networking, systems architecture, Boolean logic) is assessed in Paper 1 and Paper 2. The programming skills are developed through the non-exam assessment (NEA) and tested implicitly throughout the written papers.

Python is the most common language used for GCSE Computer Science. If your child is sitting OCR (J277), also check that the tutor knows OCR Reference Language, which is the pseudo-code used in exam questions — students who code exclusively in Python and haven't practised with the reference language can lose marks on paper.

Tutors with software development experience are often strong on programming but less focused on exam technique. Tutors with Computer Science teaching backgrounds tend to cover both sides effectively. TutorLab Computer Science tutors show their rates and subjects on their profiles.
