Is 11 Plus tutoring worth it?
11 Plus tutoring is worth it for the majority of families in areas with grammar school or competitive independent school entry, largely because the test itself — particularly Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning — assesses question formats that simply aren't taught in the standard primary curriculum.
Unlike GCSE or A-Level tutoring, which reinforces and extends school content, 11 Plus tutoring is closer to teaching an entirely separate skill set from scratch: pattern recognition, code-breaking, and specific timed-exam technique for question types a child has typically never encountered before starting preparation.
Where tutoring produces the clearest benefit:
- Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, since these question types genuinely require dedicated practice and technique-building that school doesn't provide
- Building genuine exam stamina and pacing under timed conditions, which most 10 and 11-year-olds haven't previously experienced
- Targeting the exact format (GL Assessment, or a specific school's bespoke paper) used by a family's target schools
Where the case is less clear:
- A child who is already excelling academically and finds the reasoning question types straightforward may need relatively light preparation rather than sustained, intensive tutoring
- Excessive intensity (multiple sessions weekly over a very long period) can, for some children, produce burnout or anxiety that outweighs the marginal benefit
Most families find a moderate, well-timed programme — starting 12–18 months ahead, weekly sessions rising to twice-weekly in the final term — produces the best balance between genuine improvement and a manageable workload for the child.
