Is BMAT tutoring worth it?

BMAT tutoring is worth it for applicants sitting the test, and particularly so for Section 2, which requires genuine scientific content knowledge rather than pure aptitude.

The BMAT differs from the UCAT in a meaningful way: Section 2 tests GCSE-level Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths applied at speed and often beyond the depth most schools cover in class. A tutor who can quickly identify and fill specific content gaps here produces a more direct score improvement than aptitude coaching alone.

Where BMAT tutoring adds the most value:

  • Section 1 timed practice, where technique for eliminating wrong answers under pressure is a learnable skill
  • Section 2 content gaps, especially topics rarely emphasised at GCSE such as moles calculations, genetics ratios and mechanics
  • Section 3 essay structure, where a tutor can mark against the actual BMAT mark scheme and teach the argument-counterargument-conclusion format examiners reward

Because BMAT sittings are limited to specific dates in the autumn admissions cycle and results are used directly in shortlisting decisions by the universities that still require it, focused preparation in the 6–8 weeks beforehand is a common and sensible approach. Always confirm current BMAT requirements with your target universities before booking sustained tutoring, since fewer schools now use it than in previous years.
