The transition from home to school learning can be challenging, and children develop at very different rates in the early years. Some children arrive at Reception not yet able to recognise letters or count reliably. A skilled early years tutor works through play to establish the foundations without pressure.
Is it appropriate to tutor children under 5?
Yes, if done through play-based, child-led activities — not formal drills. A good early years tutor works through games, stories, puzzles and hands-on activities that feel like play but systematically develop key skills: phonics awareness, counting, shape recognition, following instructions and communication. Sessions are short (20–30 minutes) and always enjoyable.
How can an early years tutor help with school readiness?
School readiness involves much more than knowing the alphabet and counting to ten. It also includes: sitting and listening for short periods, communicating needs clearly, turn-taking, managing basic self-care and understanding simple instructions. An early years tutor assesses where a child is across all these areas and works on whichever aspects need the most attention before Reception begins.
