Why students need help
The Year 6 SATs cover the entire KS2 curriculum and are sat under formal exam conditions, often the first time children have experienced this level of pressure. Some children become anxious; others have specific content gaps that need addressing before they can score to their potential. A tutor addresses both the content and the exam-technique dimensions.
When should SATs tutoring start?
Most families start SATs preparation in September or October of Year 6, roughly 7–8 months before the May exams. Starting earlier (Year 5) is even better as it allows gaps in knowledge to be addressed thoroughly. Starting in January of Year 6 is still helpful but leaves less time for consolidation.
Do the SATs results affect secondary school placement?
SATs results are used by secondary schools as baseline data and by local authorities to monitor school performance. They do not directly determine which secondary school your child attends (that is based on admissions criteria: catchment, siblings, faith). However, for children applying to grammar schools or selective schools, solid SATs results provide important supporting evidence.
My child is very anxious about SATs. Can a tutor help with that too?
Yes, reducing anxiety is a core part of SATs preparation. A good tutor normalises the experience (explaining that SATs are just a snapshot, not a judgment on your child as a person), builds confidence through positive practice, and teaches simple techniques like paced breathing and checking answers systematically. Children who feel prepared feel significantly less anxious.
