How much does a Computer Science tutor cost in the UK?

Private Computer Science tutors in the UK typically charge between £30 and £60 per hour. The subject is more specialist than Maths or English and the pool of qualified tutors is smaller, which reflects in the rate.

As a rough guide:

  • GCSE Computer Science (theory + Python): £30–£52/hr
  • A-Level Computer Science: £38–£60/hr

What matters most is that your tutor knows both the programming component (typically Python at GCSE and A-Level) and the theoretical content — algorithms, data structures, networking, systems architecture and Boolean logic. Some tutors are strong programmers but weak on theory, and vice versa. Look for someone who explicitly mentions the exam board (OCR J277, AQA 8520 or Edexcel 1CP1) and can describe how they cover both components.

Tutors with industry software development backgrounds can be excellent for programming skills but may be less familiar with the specific mark scheme language the theory papers require. Tutors with Computer Science teaching backgrounds tend to cover both sides well.

We ask because before we introduce a tutor to an under-18 we require two unrelated references, sight of their qualifications and a verified enhanced DBS.
