Frequently asked questions

Where does this data come from?+
Every figure on this page is computed live from tutors currently published on the TutorLab directory, plus visible unclaimed profiles built from public tutor listings. It is not a survey or a third-party estimate: it is a direct read of the rates tutors have set on their own profiles, recalculated daily.
How is the average calculated?+
Average is the mean listed hourly rate within a subject or city, after excluding any rate below £10/hr (a floor that filters out placeholder or junk values). Any subject or city with fewer than 3 tutors is left out of the tables entirely, so no figure here is based on a handful of listings.
Why might this differ from the TutorLab research estimates page?+
The companion page, Private Tutor Rates UK 2026, uses market-wide estimates drawn from publicly advertised rates across the whole UK tutoring market. This page uses only TutorLab's own live directory data. The two will diverge as the directory grows: use this page when you want a real, dated, first-party figure; use the estimates page for the broader national picture.
How often is this page updated?+
The tables refresh at least once every 24 hours as tutors join, publish, or change their rates. The date in the freshness badge at the top of the page reflects the most recent refresh.
What counts as a tutor in this dataset?+
Published TutorLab tutor profiles and visible unclaimed profiles (built from public tutor listings, excluding anyone who has opted out). Draft, unpublished, or removed profiles are never included.
Can I cite this data?+
Yes. Cite it as "TutorLab directory data, [month] 2026" with a link back to this page. Because the figures change daily, please link rather than screenshot, so readers see the current number.

Methodology

Every figure on this page is computed live from the TutorLab directory: currently published tutor profiles, plus visible unclaimed profiles built from public tutor listings (excluding anyone who has opted out). Rates below £10/hr are excluded as placeholder or junk values. Any subject or city with fewer than 3 qualifying tutors is left out of its table entirely.

Sample size: 1041 tutors as of July 2026. The tables refresh at least once every 24 hours.
