GCSE english, online

GCSE English marks come from technique. A tutor teaches it.

Most pupils who under-perform in GCSE English are not poor readers or writers. They do not know what the examiner is giving marks for, so they answer the question they think was asked rather than the one on the paper.

  • When you want lessons to start
  • The days and times that could work

Why it goes wrong

Why GCSE english goes wrong, and what a tutor changes

GCSE English is two separate qualifications, English Language and English Literature, and most pupils sit both. Language tests reading unseen texts and writing to a brief; Literature tests set texts, poetry and an unseen poem. The mark schemes are explicit about what earns credit, and a pupil who has never seen one is guessing.

Schools rarely have time for one-to-one feedback on written work. A tutor can read a full essay, mark it against the scheme, and show your child exactly where the marks were lost and how to get them back next time. Improvement in English is visible within a few essays once the technique clicks.

Online lessons work naturally for English: essays are shared as documents, annotated live, and the pupil keeps the marked copy to revise from.

What to look for

What to look for in an online GCSE english tutor

  • Teaches your child's board (AQA, Edexcel, OCR or Eduqas) and knows its assessment objectives by heart.
  • Covers the set texts your child's school has chosen, or says plainly which ones they know well.
  • Marks written work against the real mark scheme and explains the gap in plain words.
  • Builds a bank of quotations and structures the pupil can reuse under exam pressure.
  • Separates Language and Literature technique rather than treating GCSE English as one subject.

The brief asks for the board, the grade and the goal precisely so that tutors who fit can say so in their first reply.

FAQ

Questions parents ask

How much does this cost?

Nothing to ask. The price shown is one all-in price, so the price you see is the price you pay. Your tutor keeps their full rate.

How do you choose which tutors see my request?

We pick up to 3 tutors who teach this subject at this level online and are taking on new students right now. Tutors cannot pay to be put in front of you; the shortlist is only about fit.

What if nobody replies?

If nobody has replied within 22 hours, we widen the search to more tutors automatically. You do not need to chase. If no fitting tutor is free right now, we store your request and introduce you the moment one publishes. You will receive a status update within 7 days, and every status email includes a link to close the request.

Do I need a tutor for Language, Literature or both?

Say which grade is the worry on the form. Many tutors teach both; if your child only needs one, the tutor plans around that.

Which set texts do tutors cover?

It varies by tutor. Put the texts your child is studying in the details box and tutors will reply with which of them they teach.
