GCSE science: fix the one science that drags the grade down
Combined Science is worth two GCSEs and Triple Science is three, so a weak spot in one of biology, chemistry or physics costs more than one grade. Most pupils have one science they dread, and it is usually fixable.

Why it goes wrong
Why GCSE science goes wrong, and what a tutor changes
GCSE science is either Combined Science, one course examined across six papers that gives two grades, or the three separate sciences, each a GCSE in its own right. Either way, a pupil sits biology, chemistry and physics papers, and each has its own required practicals, equations and vocabulary.
The common pattern is a pupil who is fine in two sciences and lost in the third, often physics for the maths or chemistry for the abstract ideas. Schools teach all three in rotation, so the weak one gets no extra time. A tutor who specialises in that science can target it directly.
Online lessons suit science: diagrams, equations and required-practical methods are worked through on a shared screen, and past-paper questions are marked against the board's scheme.
What to look for
What to look for in an online GCSE science tutor
- Says which of biology, chemistry and physics they teach best; a generalist is fine for Combined, a specialist is better for a single weak science.
- Teaches your child's board (AQA, Edexcel or OCR) and knows whether the course is Combined or Triple, Foundation or Higher.
- Covers the required practicals as exam questions, not only as theory.
- Drills the equations and the six-mark extended answers where most marks go missing.
- Reports which science moved after each lesson so you can see the plan working.
The brief asks for the board, the grade and the goal precisely so that tutors who fit can say so in their first reply.
FAQ
Questions parents ask
How much does this cost?
Nothing to ask. The price shown is one all-in price, so the price you see is the price you pay. Your tutor keeps their full rate.
How do you choose which tutors see my request?
We pick up to 3 tutors who teach this subject at this level online and are taking on new students right now. Tutors cannot pay to be put in front of you; the shortlist is only about fit.
What if nobody replies?
If nobody has replied within 22 hours, we widen the search to more tutors automatically. You do not need to chase. If no fitting tutor is free right now, we store your request and introduce you the moment one publishes. You will receive a status update within 7 days, and every status email includes a link to close the request.
Can I ask for one science only?
Yes. The form asks which science, and your request goes to tutors who teach that one. Choose Combined Science if the problem runs across all three.
Is it Combined or Triple? I am not sure.
Ask your child or check their school timetable: Triple pupils have separate biology, chemistry and physics lessons and sit nine papers rather than six. If you still are not sure, say so on the form and the tutor will check.
