Common mistakes
Where A-Level Biology students lose marks
Content volume is the biggest challenge
AQA A-Level Biology covers approximately 200 specification points across 8 topics in Year 12 and Year 13 combined. Students who fall behind on consolidation find Year 13 content builds on gaps they never fixed in Year 12. A tutor helps manage this incrementally.
Essay questions require scientific argument, not fact lists
AQA Paper 3 includes a 25-mark synoptic essay. OCR has extended response questions throughout. Many students lose marks by writing descriptively rather than constructing a clear, evidenced scientific argument. This is a teachable skill.
Practical analysis, connecting data to biology
All boards include questions where students must interpret unfamiliar experimental data in a biological context. Students who haven't practised these feel lost, they're hard to revise from a textbook alone.

Is A-Level Biology required for Medicine?
Yes. All UK medical schools require Biology (or Human Biology where available) as an A-Level entry requirement. Chemistry is also required. Some medical schools will accept Biology plus Chemistry plus one other science. Always check the specific medical school's requirements.
