Overview

About A-Level English tutoring

A-Level English, whether Language, Literature, or the combined Lang/Lit course, rewards students who can write analytically under time pressure and argue a nuanced, textually-grounded case. Private tutoring is particularly valuable for essay technique, unseen analysis practice, and coursework planning. A specialist tutor provides the individual feedback that a class of thirty cannot.

Common mistakes

Where A-Level English students lose marks

  1. Essay structure, argument vs. description

Students who describe what happens in a text rather than constructing a clear argument consistently score in the C/B band. A tutor teaches the discipline of leading with a claim, developing it with close textual evidence, and building a cumulative argument across the essay.

  2. Unseen analysis is the hardest timed component

AQA and Edexcel both include unseen poetry or prose in timed exams. Students who haven't practised a systematic close-reading method under time pressure find this section extremely hard. A tutor drills the approach until it becomes automatic.

  3. Coursework deadlines catch students out in Year 13

A-Level English coursework is typically submitted in January or February of Year 13. Students who start planning in September and draft early produce far stronger work than those who begin in December. A tutor can guide the reading, framing and drafting process.
