About the Buckinghamshire 11 Plus exam

The Bucks 11+ (Secondary Transfer Test) is provided by GL Assessment. All children registered at a Buckinghamshire primary school sit the test automatically in Year 6; families outside the county register directly in May–June of Year 5. The qualifying standardised score is 121. Children who reach 121 receive a grammar school recommendation and can apply to any Buckinghamshire grammar.

Buckinghamshire's fully selective system means 11+ preparation is standard practice for almost all families. The most selective schools, Royal Grammar School (RGS) and Dr Challoner's, attract applications from across the county and beyond. Tutors in Amersham, Beaconsfield, High Wycombe and Marlow are in consistent demand year-round.

11 Plus in Buckinghamshire: common questions

Does every child in Buckinghamshire take the 11 Plus?

Yes. Buckinghamshire is a fully selective county. All children attending a Buckinghamshire state primary school automatically sit the Secondary Transfer Test (STT) in September of Year 6, unless parents opt out. The test determines whether a child receives a grammar school recommendation, which is required to apply to any Bucks grammar school.

What happens if my child doesn't pass the Buckinghamshire 11 Plus?

Children who do not receive a grammar school recommendation are allocated a place at a non-selective secondary school in Bucks. Some families apply to independent schools as an alternative. A small number of selective schools also operate an 'appeals' process for borderline scores, which a specialist tutor can help prepare children for.

How competitive is entry to RGS and Dr Challoner's?

Royal Grammar School and Dr Challoner's are the most selective schools in Buckinghamshire. A grammar school recommendation is necessary but not sufficient: these schools are also heavily oversubscribed, so distance to the school plays a significant role in allocation. Many families in the catchment area invest heavily in 11+ preparation to ensure their child scores well above the minimum qualifying mark.
