About the Devon 11 Plus exam

Colyton's entrance test uses Quest Assessments papers in English and maths drawn from the KS2 curriculum, taking around two and a half hours including breaks. The Torbay schools, Torquay Boys', Torquay Girls' and Churston Ferrers, share two GL Assessment papers of about 50 minutes each in English and maths. The Plymouth grammars use Quest papers with an English test covering comprehension, spelling, punctuation and grammar plus two maths papers. All sittings are in September of Year 6.

Because provision is sparse relative to the county's size, Devon grammar school places are hard-won: Colyton in particular draws applicants from across east Devon, Somerset and Dorset. Registration processes are school-specific, with some opening as early as March of Year 5, so families applying to more than one cluster need to track several deadlines and prepare for more than one paper style.

Registration deadline

Registration windows open between March and May of Year 5 depending on the school, and the tests are sat in September of Year 6. Each school or cluster has its own registration process.

11 Plus in Devon: common questions

Is there a single Devon 11 Plus test?

No. Colyton Grammar School runs its own entrance exam using Quest Assessments papers; the three Torbay grammars (Torquay Boys', Torquay Girls' and Churston Ferrers) share GL Assessment papers; and the three Plymouth grammars share Quest papers. Each school or cluster has its own registration, so applying across clusters means multiple registrations and formats.

What does the Colyton Grammar School test involve?

Colyton uses Quest Assessments papers in English and maths, based solely on Key Stage 2 National Curriculum content, in a sitting of roughly two and a half hours including breaks. There are no verbal reasoning or non-verbal reasoning papers, so preparation should focus on strong comprehension, writing accuracy and applied KS2 maths.

When are the Devon 11 Plus tests held?

All the Devon, Torbay and Plymouth grammar school tests are sat in September of Year 6, with results in mid-October and the local authority application deadline on 31 October. Registration windows differ by school and can open as early as March of Year 5, so check each target school's admissions page in the spring.

How competitive is Colyton Grammar School?

Very. Colyton is regularly among the top-performing state schools in England and serves a wide rural catchment, drawing applicants from east Devon, Somerset and Dorset. Places go to the strongest performers under the school's published criteria, and most successful applicants prepare steadily through Year 5 rather than cramming before the September sitting.
