About the Sutton 11 Plus exam

The SET is a multiple-choice test of English and maths taken in mid-September of Year 6. Children who pass are invited back for a second-stage entrance exam at their chosen schools in early October: boys at Sutton Grammar, Wilson's or Wallington County, girls at Nonsuch or Wallington High School for Girls. Second-stage papers are set by the schools and include standard-format maths and English, with writing tasks at some schools.

The Sutton schools attract applicants from across south London, Surrey and beyond, so competition is far broader than the borough itself. Several thousand children sit the SET each year for a few hundred places across the consortium. Some schools reserve places for children in specified local postcodes or eligible for pupil premium, so check each school's oversubscription criteria as well as the shared test dates.

Registration deadline

SET registration opens on 1 May and closes on 31 July of Year 5. The first-stage SET is sat in mid-September of Year 6, with second-stage exams in early October.

11 Plus in Sutton: common questions

What is the Sutton SET?

The Selective Eligibility Test is the shared first-stage 11+ exam for Sutton's five grammar schools plus the selective places at Greenshaw High School. It is a multiple-choice English and maths test sat in mid-September of Year 6. Passing the SET qualifies your child to sit the second-stage entrance exams at the individual schools in early October.

When do I register for the Sutton 11 Plus?

Registration for the SET opens on 1 May and closes on 31 July of Year 5. There is normally an earlier June deadline for requesting special access arrangements. Registration is a separate step from the local authority school application, which you still submit by 31 October of Year 6.

How competitive are the Sutton grammar schools?

Very. The consortium schools draw applicants from across south London and Surrey, and several thousand children sit the SET each year for a few hundred places. Wilson's, Sutton Grammar and Wallington County are consistently among the most oversubscribed boys' grammars in the country, and Nonsuch and Wallington High School for Girls see similar demand.

Do Sutton grammar schools have catchment areas?

Not a single catchment, but several schools give priority to children living in defined local areas or postcodes within their oversubscription criteria, alongside places allocated purely by test rank. This means out-of-area children can and do win places, while local children get some protection. Check each school's published admissions criteria for the current year.
