About the Gloucestershire 11 Plus exam
The Gloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test is sat on a Saturday in mid-September of Year 6. It consists of two papers of roughly 45 to 50 minutes each: one covering English, comprehension and verbal reasoning, the other covering maths and non-verbal reasoning. Papers are marked electronically and scores are age-standardised. Each school then sets its own qualifying standard and oversubscription criteria.
Demand varies sharply across the seven schools. Pate's is heavily oversubscribed and draws applicants from Bristol, Worcestershire and beyond as well as Gloucestershire; the Gloucester and Stroud schools are more locally contested. Because one test covers all seven, many families name several grammars on their application, using the stronger schools as aspiration and the others as realistic alternatives.
Registration deadline
Registration for the shared Gloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test opens in mid-May and closes in late June of Year 5. The test is sat on a Saturday in mid-September of Year 6, with results in mid-October.

11 Plus in Gloucestershire: common questions
How does the Gloucestershire 11 Plus work?
All seven Gloucestershire grammar schools share one entrance test. You register once, between mid-May and late June of Year 5, through any consortium school's website, and your child sits two papers on a Saturday in mid-September of Year 6: English, comprehension and verbal reasoning in one paper, maths and non-verbal reasoning in the other. Every school you apply to uses the same result.
How hard is it to get into Pate's Grammar School?
Pate's is one of the most oversubscribed grammar schools in England, drawing applicants from several counties. There is no fixed pass mark: places go to the highest-scoring applicants under the school's published criteria, so the effective threshold is set by the strength of each year's cohort. Most successful applicants prepare in a structured way through Year 5.
When do Gloucestershire 11 Plus results come out?
Results are sent to parents in mid-October of Year 6, before the local authority application deadline on 31 October. That means you see your child's score before deciding which grammar schools to name on the Common Application Form, which takes some of the guesswork out of school choices.
Which Gloucestershire grammar schools are single-sex?
Sir Thomas Rich's and Marling School admit boys; Denmark Road, Ribston Hall and Stroud High admit girls; Pate's and The Crypt School are co-educational. All seven use the shared September entrance test, so the preparation is the same whichever schools you target.
