About the Redbridge 11 Plus exam

The Redbridge 11+ consists of two GL Assessment multiple-choice papers sat on the same day with a short break between them, each lasting around 50 to 60 minutes. Children mark their answers on separate answer sheets, and scores are age-standardised. Results are emailed to parents in mid-October, in time to inform the secondary school application submitted by 31 October.

Redbridge sits in one of the most competitive 11+ corridors in the country: east London families also target the Essex CSSE schools (Ilford to Chelmsford is a short train ride) and some try for the Barnet and Enfield grammars too. Both Redbridge grammars are heavily oversubscribed every year, and many local children prepare for both the Redbridge GL format and the CSSE English-and-maths format in parallel.

Registration deadline

Registration opens on 1 May and closes in mid-June of Year 5 via Redbridge Council. The test is sat in mid-September of Year 6, with results emailed in mid-October.

11 Plus in Redbridge: common questions

How does the Redbridge 11 Plus work?

Redbridge Council runs a single 11+ for Ilford County High School (boys) and Woodford County High School (girls). You register through the council between 1 May and mid-June of Year 5, and your child sits two GL Assessment multiple-choice papers on one day in mid-September of Year 6. Results arrive by email in mid-October.

Can my child sit both the Redbridge 11+ and the Essex CSSE exam?

Yes, and many east London families do exactly that. The tests are run by different organisations on different dates, so a child can sit both. Bear in mind the formats differ: Redbridge uses GL Assessment multiple-choice papers, while the CSSE uses written English and maths papers, so preparation needs to cover both styles.

How competitive are Ilford County High and Woodford County High?

Both schools receive far more applicants than they have places every year, drawing from across east London and west Essex. There is no fixed pass mark: places go to the highest-scoring children in rank order, so the effective threshold moves with each cohort. Consistent preparation through Year 5 is the norm among successful applicants.

When should we start preparing for the Redbridge 11 Plus?

Most families start structured preparation in Year 4 or early Year 5, giving 12 to 18 months before the September test. Because registration closes in mid-June of Year 5, it helps to have a realistic view of your child's level by spring of Year 5 at the latest. A specialist tutor can assess this and focus practice on GL-style multiple-choice technique.
