About the Reading 11 Plus exam

Kendrick School sets two one-hour multiple-choice papers covering English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, sat in mid-September of Year 6, with scores age-standardised. Reading School's exam tests applied Key Stage 2 knowledge in English and maths, with an element of creative thinking; in the current cycle it has run an early-summer sitting for catchment applicants alongside a September sitting for out-of-catchment day applicants. Check each school's admissions page for the current year's exact arrangements.

With only around 128 Year 7 places at each school and applicants drawn from a wide area, doing well in the exam does not by itself guarantee a place: both schools apply distance and catchment criteria after ranking scores. Some Reading families also consider the Slough consortium grammars or the Buckinghamshire schools, all of which run separate tests with separate registrations.

Registration deadline

Registration typically opens on 1 May of Year 5 and closes between early June and early July depending on the school. Test sittings run between July and September, with Kendrick's exam in mid-September.

11 Plus in Reading: common questions

Do Reading School and Kendrick use the same 11 Plus?

No. Each school runs its own registration and entrance exam. Kendrick sets two one-hour multiple-choice papers covering English, maths and reasoning in mid-September. Reading School tests applied KS2 English and maths with a creative-thinking element, and its sitting dates have differed by applicant category in recent cycles. Applying to both means registering twice and preparing for two formats.

When do I register for the Reading grammar schools?

Registration typically opens on 1 May of Year 5. Closing dates differ by school and cycle, generally between early June and early July, and late registrations are not accepted for the main sittings. Results arrive in October, ahead of the 31 October local authority application deadline.

How competitive are Reading School and Kendrick?

Extremely. Each school has only around 128 Year 7 places, both rank among the strongest state schools in the country, and both attract far more applicants than places. After test scores are ranked, distance and catchment criteria decide between qualified applicants, so a strong score from inside the priority area is the most secure position.

Is there a catchment area for Reading grammar schools?

Both schools use designated area or distance criteria within their oversubscription rules, and Reading School has run separate sittings for catchment and out-of-catchment applicants. The details are published in each school's admissions policy for the entry year, so check the current documents before deciding whether an application is realistic from your address.
