The exam
The Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium exam is sat in mid-September of Year 6 and consists of two multiple-choice papers, each around an hour, with a short break between them. The papers assess English, maths and reasoning, and scores are age-standardised. Two Catholic grammar schools in the borough, St Ambrose College and Loreto Grammar School, run their own separate entrance assessments.
The Altrincham grammars and Sale Grammar are the most oversubscribed in the consortium, drawing applicants from Manchester, Salford, Stockport and Cheshire as well as Trafford itself. Because the borough is fully selective, 11+ preparation is standard for a large share of local Year 5 children, and mock-exam services in Altrincham and Sale book up months before the September test.
Registration deadline
Registration for the Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium test opens in late April and closes in mid-June of Year 5. The entrance exam is sat in mid-September of Year 6, with results emailed in mid-October.
FAQ
Five Trafford grammar schools, Altrincham Boys, Altrincham Girls, Sale, Urmston and Stretford, share one consortium entrance exam. You register once, between late April and mid-June of Year 5, and your child sits two multiple-choice papers covering English, maths and reasoning in mid-September of Year 6. The same result is used by every consortium school you apply to.
Results are emailed to parents in mid-October, a couple of weeks before the local authority secondary application deadline on 31 October. That timing lets you decide whether to name grammar schools on the application form with your child's actual score in hand.
The Altrincham grammar schools and Sale Grammar are generally the most oversubscribed, attracting strong applicants from across Greater Manchester and Cheshire. Urmston and Stretford Grammar typically have slightly lower effective thresholds, though all five require a strong performance. Each school publishes its own oversubscription criteria, with distance rules that differ between schools.
Yes. The consortium schools admit primarily on test performance, and out-of-borough applicants from Manchester, Salford and Cheshire win places every year, particularly at the Altrincham schools. Some schools include distance or catchment elements in their criteria, so read each school's admissions policy alongside the shared test arrangements.
