About the Wirral 11 Plus exam

The Wirral Admissions Test consists of two multiple-choice papers taken on the same day, covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths. From the September 2026 sitting the test is provided by Quest Assessments, a change from the GL Assessment papers used in earlier years, so older past papers no longer reflect the current format exactly. Scores are age-standardised and results arrive in mid-October.

Grammar school entry is a well-worn path on the Wirral, with a significant share of each Year 6 cohort sitting the Admissions Test, plus out-of-borough applicants from Liverpool and Cheshire. The provider switch to Quest makes format-specific practice more important than ever: children prepared only on legacy GL papers can be caught out by unfamiliar question styles and timings.

Registration deadline

Registration for the Wirral Admissions Test closes at noon on 1 June of Year 5. The test is sat in mid-September of Year 6, with results posted in mid-October. The Catholic grammars hold their own sittings in the same month.

11 Plus in Wirral: common questions

How does the Wirral 11 Plus work?

Four Wirral grammar schools, Calday Grange, West Kirby, Wirral Grammar for Boys and Wirral Grammar for Girls, share the Wirral Admissions Test: two multiple-choice papers covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths, sat on one day in mid-September of Year 6. The Catholic grammars, St Anselm's College and Upton Hall, hold their own separate entrance exams in the same month.

Has the Wirral 11 Plus changed format?

Yes. From the September 2026 sitting, the Wirral Admissions Test is provided by Quest Assessments rather than GL Assessment. The test still covers reasoning and maths in multiple-choice form, but question styles and pacing differ from the old GL papers, so preparation should use materials matched to the current format rather than relying only on legacy past papers.

When do I register for the Wirral Admissions Test?

Registration runs through the spring of Year 5 and closes at noon on 1 June. The test is then sat in mid-September of Year 6, results arrive in mid-October, and the local authority secondary application closes on 31 October. The Catholic grammars have their own registration processes with similar timings.

How competitive are Wirral grammar schools?

All six schools receive more applicants than places, with Calday Grange and West Kirby typically among the most in demand. There is no single fixed pass mark: each school sets a qualifying standard and fills places by rank and its published criteria. Out-of-borough applicants from Liverpool and Cheshire add to the competition each year.
